Social Media in the UAE Right Now: What's Actually Moving the Needle
Every year brings a new list of “social media trends,” most of which are the same three ideas wearing different names. Rather than predict what's coming, here's what we're actually seeing move accounts we manage in the UAE right now, and what's quietly becoming a waste of budget.
Short-form video isn't a trend anymore, it's the baseline
If your content calendar is still built primarily around static posts, you're not behind on a trend, you're behind on the format the algorithms across Instagram, TikTok, and even LinkedIn are actively favouring. This isn't about jumping on every sound. It's about defaulting to video as the first format you plan, and treating static as the exception rather than the rule.
UGC-style ads are outperforming polished production
We've run enough paid tests across F&B, retail, and service brands in Dubai to say this with confidence: a well-shot but obviously-an-ad video underperforms a rougher, testimonial-style clip more often than founders expect. Audiences have gotten fast at spotting and skipping polished ads. Content that looks like it came from a real customer, even when it's produced by your team, earns more watch time and lower cost per result.
WhatsApp is a channel, not just a support line
In the UAE specifically, WhatsApp click-to-chat ads and WhatsApp Business catalogues are converting extremely well for local and regional brands, often better than a traditional landing page for the same audience. If your funnel still ends at a contact form, you're adding friction for a market that overwhelmingly prefers to message first.
Community is starting to outperform pure reach
Brands investing in comment sections, close friends stories, and small, engaged communities are seeing better retention and referral behaviour than accounts chasing follower count alone. Reach still matters for awareness, but for repeat business, the accounts that reply, engage, and feel human are pulling ahead of the ones that just post and move on.
What to quietly retire
- Heavily scripted, studio-lit ad reads with no product or proof on screen.
- Posting purely on a fixed schedule regardless of what's actually performing.
- Treating follower count as a KPI you report on its own, disconnected from leads or sales.
- Generic caption CTAs (“link in bio!”) with no reason given to actually click.
None of this requires a bigger budget, mostly a different set of priorities in how that budget gets spent. If your social presence feels like it's producing content without producing results, that's usually a strategy problem before it's a budget problem, and it's worth a second look.
